Medical Device Registration in India: What CDSCO Actually Expects
Want to sell a medical device in India? Sooner or later you’ll deal with CDSCO, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation. It sits under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and it’s the body that decides whether your device is safe enough for Indian patients. Make it here or import it, the process goes much better if you understand it before you file anything.
The Rulebook
Everything is built on the Medical Devices Rules, 2017. They split devices into four risk classes:
– Class A: low risk
– Class B: low-moderate risk
– Class C: moderate-high risk
– Class D: high risk
Your class drives most of what comes next: the forms you file, who reviews them, how much evidence you need to show. If you manufacture Class A or B devices in India, licensing usually runs through the State Licensing Authority. Class C and D manufacturing licences go to CDSCO, and so do import licences. Form numbers differ by class and route, so confirm the right ones for your device first.
From Application to Licence
Classify the device. Look at what it’s meant to do and match it against CDSCO’s classification lists. A wrong guess here can send you back to the beginning, so don’t rush it.
Build your documentation. A technical file, product specifications, details of your quality management system, and clinical evidence if your device needs it. Expect this to eat the most time.
File online. Applications go through the CDSCO portal, using the forms for your device class and licence type.
Be ready for questions. Reviewers often ask for clarifications or more data. Quick, complete replies keep the file moving.
Receive the licence. When CDSCO is satisfied, you get the manufacturing or import licence you applied for.
Your Paperwork Checklist
It varies by device, but most applicants prepare:
– Device and product details
– Manufacturing site information
– ISO 13485 certification, where it applies
– Test reports
– Clinical evidence, if required
– A free sale certificate, for imported devices
Gaps in this pile are among the most common reasons applications stall. Check it twice before you submit.
Why Bother Doing It Properly
A licence is more than a legal formality. It tells hospitals, distributors and buyers that your product has passed Indian regulatory scrutiny, and it opens the door to one of the fastest-growing healthcare markets anywhere.
If all this sounds like a lot, you don’t have to do it alone.
