What is Clodronate Disodium?

Clodronate Disodium is a defined organic compound recorded by PubChem as Clodronate Disodium. Its molecular formula is CH10Cl2Na2O10P2, and its relative molecular mass is approximately 360.91 g/mol. Disodium clodronate tetrahydrate is the tetrahydrate of the disodium salt of clodronic acid. It inhibits bone resorption and soft tissue calcification, and is used as an adjunct in the treatment of severe hypercalcaemia associated with malignancy, and in the management of osteolytic lesions and bone pain associated with skeletal metastases.

It has a role as a bone density conservation agent. Its biological or pharmacological significance is governed by the specific molecular form and the interactions described above; dose, exposure route, formulation, and metabolism determine whether an observed effect is therapeutic, toxicological, or simply physicochemical. Major uses may include medicinal or biochemical research, analytical reference standards, impurity and stability testing, formulation studies, and regulated manufacturing where identity and purity are controlled.
